The Montessori Difference

Montessori Traditional
Attention is focused on the child. Attention is focused on the teacher.
Learning is at each individual child's pace. Learning is at the group's pace.
The children are free to move about the classroom and interact with respect. The children are expected to stay in their seats with little opportunity to socialize.
Children choose works they will do and thus become self-directed, self-motivated, and self-disciplined. Teacher chooses the work; rewards and punishments serve as motivators.
Thousands of "hands on" concrete materials function as teachers and allow the child to self-correct. System primarily uses books and testing.
Emphasis is on social development, peace education and conflict resolution. Emphasis is on conformity.
